Southern African Shipyards is strategically located on the east coast of South Africa in Durban, one of Africa’s busiest ports. Established in 1960 and a proudly South African company, we have the largest shipyard in Southern Africa consisting of 11 hectares with a useable water frontage of 300 metres.
Our privately owned floating dock can accommodate vessels up to 75 m in length.
Southern African Shipyards holds the record for building the largest ship ever constructed on the African continent and has a proud history of building quality ships: from a Fleet Replenishment Vessel of 147m in length, to the South African Navy’s Strike Craft and Mine Hunters, Voith Schneider tugs and Mega Luxury Yachts.
The company is 60% Black owned and employees own 12% of the shares. Southern African Shipyards, which is ISO 19001:2008 certified, has an international reputation built on quality workmanship.

Southern African Shipyards completed in partnership with Oceanco 14 vessels and transported them to Holland. Picture to the right are twin 80 metre long sister ships and a smaller 52 metre yachts. All yachts are manufactured to the same stage of completion.

The 121.39ft Custom motor yacht motor yacht ‘Caprice’ was built by Southern African Shipyards under license to Oceanco in Netherlands, she was delivered to her owner in 1994. This luxury vessel’s sophisticated exterior design and engineering are the work of Gerhard Gilgenast. The yacht’s interior has been designed by Donald Starkey.
ACCOMMODATION
Caprice’s interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests overnight in 4 cabins, 1 double cabin and 3 twin cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 6 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.
CONSTRUCTION & DIMENSIONS
Caprice features a semi-displacement aluminium hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. She was built to ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) +A1 Yachting Service classification society rules.
PERFORMANCE
Powered by 2 Deutz ( TBD 604B V8) 1,350hp diesel engines and propelled by her twin screw propellers Motor yacht Caprice is capable of a top speed of 18 knots, and comfortably cruises at 16 knots. With her 47,691 litres fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 4,500 nautical miles at 15 knots. Her water tanks store around 9,462 litres of fresh water.

ABOUT STARGATE
Owned by the Emir of Qatar, she is the sistership to Constellation.Stargate is a 80.00m (262.46 ft) luxury motor yacht. She was built by Oceanco in 2001 making the yacht 16 years old. With a beam of 12.98m and a draft of 4.21m, she has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. This adds up to a gross tonnage of 1723 tones. She is classified by Lloyds. She is powered by MTU 20V 1163 engines of 8,160hp each, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 24 knots and cruise at 20 knots for 3600 nautical miles.
She can accommodate 22 guests in 11 cabins with an interior design by The A Group & Costantini and an exterior design by The A group.
